Infant car seats are one of the most important purchases with respect to your newborn's safety. They are typically used for the first 6-10 months of life. Proper installation should occur in the middle of the back seat with the baby facing the rear window of the car. In some instances however, when an infant car seat does not fit in the middle position, it should be relocated to the left or right outboard positions of the back seat, facing the rear window.
Though many car seats of different manufacturers have similar specs and features, they are designed differently and can feel completely different to the parent carrying them. Try them out, lift them with one of our weighted dolls inside, and then you can determine what you like or dislike about each product. Before purchasing an infant car seat, you should think about the following:
- When removing the infant seat off the base, does the handle rub along the ceiling of the car?
- Once you have the infant seat off the base, does the seat fit through the car door easily?
- Now that it is out of the car, do you find the infant car seat easy to carry?
- Are there sufficient “comfort” features for your infant?
Although the infant car seat is only used for about 6 months, it does get used quite a bit in that
short period of time. You'll want to make sure that you've chosen the right one. If you have any questions

Convertible Car Seats
Do you know that approximately 75% of car seats are installed improperly? In 2002, regulations were changed, making it even more confusing to purchase and install car seats.
The changes, involved a new method for installing car seats, called the Universal Lower Anchorage System (ULAS). It was brought forth to make installation easier and safer.
All vehicles manufactured after September 2002 have a small connecting rod where the base and the back of the rear seat meet. All new car seats (both infant and juvenile manufactured since 2001) have a clip that connects to the rod, securing the seat in place. Take note, as you'll still be required to tether a convertible car seat to the top anchor. What the new system does, however, is prevent people from improperly using their seat belts to secure the car seat.
Another change involved the positioning of the car seat. Previously, when your baby graduated from an infant car seat, they were seated forward, facing the driver. The current law states that your baby must be facing the back of the car until they are 1 year old or 30lbs.
Clearly, there's a lot to consider when purchasing any form of car seat for your child. The very knowledgeable staff at Li'l Niblets & Baby Sprouts has the expertise to help you pick the best car seat for your needs.
